4 important advice for using your CPAP mask to fall asleep quickly

9th Feb 2023

  1. CHOOSING THE RIGHT MASK STYLE IS IMPORTANT
The good news is that CPAP machines have improved a lot. Traditional machines were clunky, noisy and had a huge face mask. Newer models are quieter and there are different mask styles that you can choose from depending on which one you feel most comfortable with. Common CPAP mask styles include full face, nasal masks, nasal pillow masks and oral masks. Consider which position you sleep in while choosing the mask style. If you are a stomach or side sleeper, the larger masks with multiple straps may push against your pillow.
  2. ENSURE THE MASK FITS PROPERLY.
Once you know which mask style is best for you, ensure it fits comfortably.Ill-fitting CPAP masks can be uncomfortableand lead to a dry and stuffy nose. If there are red marks on your face, the mask is too tight. Conversely, you won’t get the most out of a CPAP mask if it is too loose.

Make adjustmentsevery night until you find the ideal fit. When you adjust your mask, you should do it when you are lying down with the mask on your face. If you are facing difficulty wearing your mask, your doctor will assist you with the fitting.
  3. WEAR GLOVES TO KEEP THE MASK IN PLACE
It's not uncommon for people to wake up in the morning and find that their sleep apnea mask is not in place but they don’t remember removing it at night so how do you keep it in place? The solution is wearing gloves.

Gloves will prevent you from accidentally taking off your mask during the night when you are not aware you are doing it. After training yourself for a few weeks, you can ditch them altogether. If you still have trouble sleeping after using gloves, speak to your doctor about why it is happening.
  4. FOLLOW A SLEEP ROUTINE
Once youbuy a CPAP mask, it is important that you stick to a sleep routine when you are adjusting to the machine. This will train your mind and body that itstime to sleep and that CPAP is part of your bedtime routine. It might be difficult to find a good rhythm but its ok to take your time adjusting to the new routine to make it work better for you.
